Roald Dahl Premium Collection 19-Book Colour Edition Paperback Set

Roald Dahl was a British author whose imaginative storytelling helped shape modern children’s literature. Born in Wales in 1916, Dahl experienced an adventurous early adulthood that included working in Africa and serving as an RAF fighter pilot during the Second World War. His wartime experiences later influenced his writing, while his career eventually expanded across children’s fiction, adult short stories and screenwriting.

Dahl became particularly famous for children’s stories that combine mischievous humour, exaggerated characters, strange inventions, frightening villains and children who are often considerably cleverer than the adults around them. Characters including Willy Wonka, Matilda, the BFG, Fantastic Mr Fox and the Grand High Witch have become enduring figures in children’s literature.

His storytelling is distinctive for its playful use of language and willingness to make stories strange, dark and wonderfully unpredictable. The Roald Dahl Museum preserves an extensive archive of his manuscripts, correspondence, drafts and working notes, illustrating the considerable amount of experimentation and rewriting behind his published work.

The Guardian

The Guardian’s critical overview of Roald Dahl highlights one of the defining qualities behind his enduring popularity, his ability to place himself firmly on the child reader’s side. His exaggerated worlds, rebellious children and frequently ridiculous adults created a distinctive relationship between storyteller and young reader that helped his books maintain their appeal across generations.

Lucy Mangan, The Guardian

Reflecting on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fifty years after its original publication, Lucy Mangan explored the remarkable imagination behind Dahl’s chocolate filled world and the mischievous spirit that made the story so distinctive. The novel’s extraordinary inventions, moral mischief and unforgettable setting have helped make it one of Dahl’s most recognisable works.

Critical Legacy

Dahl’s work has not been without controversy, and critics have debated elements of his characterisation, morality and portrayals of adults and society. Yet that same willingness to be grotesque, rebellious and unconventional has been central to his appeal. His stories frequently refuse to behave like polite traditional children’s tales, which is precisely why generations of young readers have found them so entertaining.
